Cohen and Peyton Featured at June 11 Galveston Art Walk

6-8 p.m. Saturday, June 11, 2011
The Weber House
1401 Post Office
Galveston, TX

Karen Derr will once again open the doors of her restored 1876 Victorian home and realty office to showcase the works of two Houston artists -- Lindsay Peyton and Mitchell Cohen.

The walls of the Weber House will be adorned with recent works by the two painters as part of Galveston's June Art Walk. The show, entitled “Reprise,” is open to the public from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 11. The Weber House is located at 1401 Post Office at the corner of 14th.

Derr and Cohen hosted Peyton's first show in Galveston in May of 2008. Over the past three years, Cohen has returned to painting and will be exhibiting several of his own pieces.

“We decided to call the show ‘Reprise,’ in our attempt to revisit, and perhaps recreate, the magic of the show Karen hosted three years ago," Peyton said. “This year's event is a celebration of Galveston's burgeoning arts scene and, of Karen, in particular, who has been so generous in her support of artists.”

Peyton's works in oil, pastels, charcoal and ink have been featured in numerous group and solo shows in galleries and arts festivals. For the art walk, she will share works from a new series focusing on interior rooms. “I am focusing on spaces that are layered with texture, color and special memories,” Peyton said.

Cohen will display works influenced by his experiences as a professional faux painter and sign painter.

“It's going to be an eclectic mix of styles and themes – that’s for sure,” Cohen said. “I'm a frantic painter -- I'll work on several at a time late into the night. So I'm just as anxious to see what I come up with as my friends are.”

Derr's Galveston office survived the storm of 1900 and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. It is often included in “Other Walls” on the Galveston Art Walk, displaying works by local artists.

A joint exhibition of paintings by Ian Anderson and Lindsay Peyton featuring Anderson's complex portraits and Peyton's indoor and outdoor spaces.

Ian Anderson is a Houston native, who studied art at Otis College in California and the Glassell School of Art in Houston. He lived in Los Angeles for five years, working in animation and painting custom tiles. For Anderson, art is a form of storytelling, and he is currently drawn to science fiction. He is inspired by quantum mechanics and modern theories in science and enjoys expressing these new ideas with an old medium – oil paint. The portraits featured in this show explore the layers of one's nature, with mirrors often depicting the many facets. Faded and blurred images are used to separate our perception of a person's exterior from the interior reality.

Lindsay Peyton's works in oil, pastels, charcoal and ink have been featured in numerous group and solo shows in galleries and arts festivals as well as auctions supporting a number of worthy charities. Peyton also serves on the Artist Advisory Board of Spacetaker and teaches private and group art lessons. A Houston native who spent her childhood on the East Coast, she is a photojournalism graduate of UT- Austin. The oil paintings she selected for this show explore indoor rooms and outdoor spaces.

Admission: Free and open to the public.
